Spatial Distributions and Stochastic Parameter Influences on SWAT Flow and Sediment Predictions

چکیده
The Soil and Water Assessment Tool SWAT was implemented in Northwest Arkansas to investigate flow and sediment predictive ability at multiple subbasin and hydrologic response units HRU distributions. The objectives of this study were to use SWAT and identify differences in annual predicted flow and sediment response of a watershed considering two subbasin delineations with six different HRU distributions each; quantify the uncertainty in SWAT output when sensitive model parameters are considered to have stochastic distribution; and evaluate the ability of the model to describe flow and sediment predictions of an ungauged watershed by stochastically validating the model. Flow results from the Single-Factor Between-Subjects Analysis of Variance test =0.05 indicated that predicted flow means were not significantly different from each other for all SWAT subbasin/HRU combinations; however, predicted flow means and measured flow mean were significantly different. Sediment simulation results suggested significant differences were present amongst the different model subbasin/HRU delineations and measured values. The Monte Carlo simulation of the model, using curve number CN , soil evaporation compensation factor ESCO , groundwater revap coefficient GW_REVAP , and peak rate adjustment factor for sediment routing in the subbasin AMP as uncertain parameters, indicated that generally ESCO induced most uncertainty in predicted flow. However, sediment prediction uncertainty was affected most by uncertainty in AMP. Results indicated that SWAT applications on ungauged watersheds should include small subbasin sizing 2% of watershed area , HRUs that reflect actual land cover composition, a check to evaluate surface runoff and ground water contributions and modification of parameters as needed to reflect site conditions, sensitivity analysis, and uncertainty analysis that includes several sensitive parameters. Modeling the Impacts of Spatial Heterogeneity in the Castor Watershed on Runoff, Sediment, and Phosphorus Loss Using SWAT: I. Impacts of Spatial Variability of Soil Properties
Spatial accuracy of hydrologic modeling inputs influences the output from hydrologic models. A pertinent question is to know the optimal level of soil sampling or how many soil samples are needed for model input, in order to improve model predictions. In this study, measured soil properties were clustered into five different configurations as inputs to the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) ...

Water quality modeling efforts for developing total maximum daily loads often use geographical information system data of varying quality in watershed-scale models and have shown varying impacts on model results. Several streams in the southern Piedmont are listed for sediment total maximum daily loads. The objective of this study was to test the effect of spatial resolution of soil data on the...

Accurate predictions of sediment yield from distributed models of runoff and sediment yield depends in part of how well matched the model structure is to input data spatial representation. This study investigated how model structure and input data representation affect sediment predictions made using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). The study focused on the integration of two specific...

The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) does not fully simulate riparian buffers, but has a simple filter function that is responsive to filter strip width (FILTERW). The objectives of this study were to (1) evaluate SWAT hydrology and water quality response to changes in watershed subdivision levels and different FILTERW configurations and (2) provide guidance for selecting appropriate water...

Over-parameterization is a well-known and often described problem in hydrological models, especially in distributed models. Therefore, using special methods to reduce the number of parameters via sensitivity analysis is important to achieve efficiency. This paper describes a sensitivity analysis strategy that graphically assigns for each parameter a relative sensitivity index and relationship o...
